How Top Desert began

A family story, rooted in the Sahara

Top Desert began in 2011 with a small office in M'Hamid El Ghizlane, a first private journey to the dunes of Erg Chigaga, and a simple ambition: to help travelers experience Morocco through the people who know it personally.

Rooted in M'Hamid El Ghizlane

M'Hamid El Ghizlane is more than the starting point for many of our desert journeys. It is the home of our extended family and ancestors, and the place where our connection to Berber and nomadic traditions runs deepest.

Long before Top Desert existed, we were already working in tourism, arranging desert treks and helping travelers who arrived in M'Hamid looking for a genuine way to discover the Sahara.

Two founders, complementary roles

Moha brought experience as a licensed Moroccan guide and a travel agent. Abdou's experience was built entirely on the ground, through years of practical work in desert tourism and close relationships with local teams and communities.

Today, Moha shapes the journey before departure and remains attentive to guest feedback. Abdou turns the plan into reality, coordinating the logistics, local team, and day-to-day experience on the ground.

Intentionally small by choice

We chose to remain intentionally small. By welcoming a limited number of travelers, we can stay personally involved, control the quality of every journey, and give each guest our full attention.

Our journey in years

From one desert journey to a trusted Morocco travel company

Each milestone reflects steady, practical growth rather than a desire to become a high-volume operator.

  1. The beginning

    Top Desert is created

We opened our first office in M'Hamid El Ghizlane and operated our first private journey to the dunes of Erg Chigaga.

  2. First recognition

    Tripadvisor Certificate of Excellence

We received our first Certificate of Excellence in 2013. Top Desert has been recognized repeatedly by Tripadvisor since then, most recently with a 2025 Tripadvisor Travelers' Choice Award.

  3. Growing carefully

    Marrakech office and first vehicles

We opened our Marrakech office and purchased our first vehicles, giving us greater control over the planning, transportation, and consistency of our private journeys.

  4. A home in the remote Sahara

    Our first Erg Chigaga camp

We opened our first camp among the remote dunes of Erg Chigaga, allowing us to offer a quieter and more personal desert experience away from mass-tourism crowds.

  5. A second desert destination

    Our first Merzouga camp

We opened our first camp in Merzouga, giving travelers another way to experience the Sahara while allowing our team to design journeys around different needs, routes, and levels of accessibility.

  6. Still personally involved

Private journeys, created one at a time

We remain a small, family-run company. Every journey is still planned with care, coordinated locally, and supported by people who understand the itinerary before the traveler ever arrives in Morocco.

Tourism that creates value locally

We work directly with local partners, employ or purchase from nomadic families, support local hosts, and use local food, crafts, transportation, and services wherever possible. This helps create income in remote areas while preserving skills and traditional knowledge.

Progress built through experience

The early years required patience, long days, and constant learning. Later, like tourism businesses across Morocco, we faced the disruption of the pandemic. Each difficult period reinforced the same lesson: listen carefully, adapt, and keep improving the experience we offer.

How your journey comes together

Thought through before you arrive. Personally followed until you leave.

A private Morocco journey should feel natural once it begins. Behind that ease is a careful process of listening, designing, coordinating, adapting, and learning, handled by people who remain connected throughout.

First contact

We begin with the traveler, not a fixed itinerary

Before recommending a route, we learn about your travel dates, group, interests, preferred pace, accommodation expectations, and any practical or personal considerations.

This may include traveling with children or older family members, celebrating a special occasion, avoiding long driving days, or looking for a quieter and more remote Sahara experience.

We consider
  • Dates and group composition
  • Interests and priorities
  • Comfort and accommodation style
  • Pace and practical requirements

Journey design

Moha shapes a route that works as a complete journey

Moha develops the itinerary before departure using first-hand knowledge of Morocco's routes, regions, accommodations, and seasonal conditions.

The purpose is not to include the greatest possible number of places. It is to create the right balance of discovery, driving, rest, comfort, and meaningful experiences.

Honest advice sometimes means recommending a longer journey, a different route, or another desert destination.

Local coordination

Abdou brings every part of the plan together

Once the journey is confirmed, Abdou coordinates the practical details on the ground, including transportation, drivers, accommodations, desert camps, local hosts, activities, and timing.

The itinerary discussed before arrival is therefore connected directly to the people responsible for delivering it.

Experiences

On the road

Carefully planned, without becoming inflexible

Your itinerary provides structure, but travel sometimes requires judgment. Weather, road conditions, local events, or a guest's changing energy can affect the day.

Because the journey is private and coordinated locally, the team can respond thoughtfully while protecting the overall experience.

Entirely private

You are not required to follow the pace or preferences of an unrelated group.

After the journey

What guests tell us shapes what we improve next

Moha remains attentive to feedback about routes, accommodations, drivers, camps, pacing, and small operational details.

This feedback is reviewed and used to improve the journeys that follow. It is one of the practical advantages of remaining intentionally small and personally involved.

The result

One continuous relationship from the first conversation to the final day in Morocco.

Local impact

Tourism should create value where the journey happens.

Morocco is not simply the setting for our journeys. It is our home. We therefore work directly with local drivers, guides, camps, families, craftspeople, and accommodation partners, especially in remote regions where tourism can make a meaningful difference.

Our responsibility

A journey should leave guests with meaningful memories and leave something meaningful within the communities that welcomed them.

Responsible travel is not a separate activity added to an itinerary. It is reflected in who we work with, where money is spent, how experiences are organized, and whether local people participate fairly in the value created by tourism.

Connected to the Sahara

Supporting communities through work, trade, and long-term relationships

In remote parts of southern Morocco, tourism can provide important opportunities for families whose livelihoods are closely connected to the desert.

We work with local camp teams, drivers, hosts, cooks, guides, and nomadic families. Whenever practical, we also purchase food, crafts, supplies, and services within the regions our guests visit.

The aim is not to turn local life into a performance, but to create respectful exchanges in which communities participate fairly in the value generated by travel.

Direct local partnerships

We prioritize people and businesses we know personally, including drivers, guides, camp teams, hosts, and activity providers.

Income in remote communities

We employ locally and purchase food, services, crafts, and supplies in the regions through which our journeys travel.

Traditional knowledge respected

Local knowledge is not treated as decoration. It shapes the routes, stories, hospitality, meals, and experiences shared with our guests.

Long-term relationships

We prefer dependable partnerships that can grow over time, rather than choosing providers only according to the lowest available price.

A practical commitment

We cannot claim that travel has no impact. Our responsibility is to make thoughtful choices, work transparently with local partners, and ensure that more of the value remains within Morocco.

Experience

More than thirteen years creating private journeys across Morocco

Experience has taught us where itineraries need breathing room, when a longer route creates a better journey, which partners remain dependable, and how small operational decisions can shape an entire experience.

Every review represents someone who trusted us with their time, their expectations, and their experience of Morocco.

The people behind your journey

No one creates a journey alone.

Every private journey depends on people who understand their role, know the region in which they work, and remain connected to the same plan.

From the first conversation to the final day in Morocco, responsibility passes between people we know and trust, not between anonymous departments.
